Responsible gambling

Betting is a paid form of entertainment, not a source of income. This page is about keeping it that way.

What to understand about predictions

A prediction is an estimate of probability, not knowledge of the result. Even a good estimate is wrong often: an outcome at 68% fails roughly one time in three, and that is the model working as intended, not failing.

Nobody beats football consistently — not a tipster, not a statistical model, not a language model. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something.

When to stop

The warning signs are well known and worth knowing before they apply to you:

  • betting more than you decided to, or more often than you meant to;
  • chasing losses with a bigger stake to "get it back";
  • betting with money set aside for something else, or with borrowed money;
  • hiding the scale of it from people close to you;
  • thinking about the next bet during work, conversation or sleep;
  • irritability or low mood when you cannot bet.

One of these is a reason to pause. Several at once is a reason to talk to someone.

Rules that lower the risk

  • Decide the monthly amount in advance and treat it as spent on entertainment.
  • Never stake money you need for anything else, and never borrow to bet.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit.
  • Do not bet to recover a loss — the loss is already real, the next bet is a separate one.
  • Do not bet while drunk, angry or upset.
  • Keep a record of what you actually staked and won. Memory flatters.

Self-exclusion tools

Every licensed operator offers deposit and stake limits, time-outs and self-exclusion; they are switched on in your account and keep working when willpower does not. In Britain, GAMSTOP excludes you from all licensed online operators at once. Blocking software on your phone and computer closes off gambling sites entirely.

Where to get help

Gambling addiction is treatable, and going to a professional about it is as ordinary as going about anything else. Free, confidential help:

  • BeGambleAware — the National Gambling Helpline, 0808 8020 133, open 24 hours.
  • GamCare — counselling, live chat and support groups.
  • Gamblers Anonymous — peer meetings, in person and online.
  • GamAnon — for family and friends of someone who gambles.

If making that call is too much right now, tell someone you trust instead. Starting there is better than not starting.

What we do

  • We sell no tips, no subscriptions and no personal betting advice.
  • We promise no profit and show no retrospective "winning runs".
  • We publish the misses next to the hits in the results archive.
  • We claim no edge over the line for a bet: the probability next to it is the market's price, not our own number.

The site is intended for readers aged 18 and over and is informational: see the terms of use for the detail.
